前几章翻译得相当好
历史客观性历来受到怀疑，后现代主义加速了对过去建构的可能性的瓦解，试图剥夺历史学科的合法性和存在理由，这样逼迫历史学家重新审视自己学科的理论和实践。作者一方面捍卫历史客观性、抵斥虚无主义的同时，也开放积极地拥抱部分后现代主义对历史书写疆界的拓展。不得不联想到新闻客观性理想的捍卫，最后多少都需要信仰的支撑，书中很多主题的讨论用在新闻业上也未为不可。在意义消解和被怀疑论侵蚀的时代中，屈威廉的话语依旧熠…
英国学者不少都看上去温文尔雅的绅士，探讨起学术来就是不惧枪林弹雨的战士，本书作者就是这样一位。从史学史的变化入手，探讨后现代主义对于历史学的影响，对于历史，乃至对于哲学、社会与道德等感兴趣的其他学科的读者都可从中得到启示，随着讨论的深入专业性也不断增强，跋更是与其他相关，尤其是后现代主义历史学家的大战，非专业人士可略过。进阶书目很有参考价值，翻译很用心，虽然张仲民多少有点掉书袋就是了。
历史而需要捍卫，正说明其处于风雨飘摇之际，读罢本书，却是充满着对历史研究的信心与辩证……所可惜者，今昔异势也
