出生於美國。大學畢業後，投身旅行工作，先到義大利、非洲，於馬拉威的叢林學校擔任和平團教師，並在烏干達的大學擔任講師。1968年，應聘前往新加坡大學，任教於英文系。這段時間，將短篇故事及為報章雜誌撰寫的文章結集成冊，並著手數篇小說，包括〈方與印地安人〉、〈嬉戲的女孩〉、〈叢林戀人〉等，這些小說收錄於《大裂谷的邊緣》（The Edge of the Great Rift，1996）。1970年代早期，索魯與家人移居英格蘭，隨後遷往倫敦，在英國居住了十多年。這段時期，寫了幾部評價甚高的小說及多篇廣受歡迎的旅遊文章，《漫遊世界》（Travelling the World，1992）一書即由這些旅遊文章精選編纂而成。他目前在美國定居，仍前往各處旅行。

和往常的书一样好看，但不知道是不是Paul叔老了，虽然延续了他一贯挑剔的毛病，但是这次显得幽默了很多。看完更想去非洲了，但是正如作者所说：把非洲留给非洲人民自己吧，那些认为自己能救非洲的慈善机构，非盈利组织，传教的，只不过一厢情愿罢了。而且在他们的“帮助”下，非洲越来越惨。
确实对去非洲这个念头有点提不起兴趣哇咋回事…感谢Paul帮我不出门也能深度认识非洲风土ps lunch break走路去central lib阳光很好
太棒了，仿佛跟着作者亲历了一路的风景和交谈；读过之后看谷岳的《岳野支路》，2018年从开普敦自驾到开罗的纪录片，反走theroux走过的路，风景会有多少不同？
确实是“看完后不想去非洲”的感觉，不过本来我也不怎么想去。
