在宋代道學與政治糾葛變化最激越的孝宗、光宗、寧宗三朝，中下階層官員孫應時（1154-1206）躬逢學術蓬勃發展而成為道學追隨者，日後又因道學領袖捲入朝廷政治鬥爭而遭受波及，身陷慶元黨禁陰霾。本書藉由譜寫孫應時的生命故事，描繪南宋中期道學追隨者如何利用自身宦歷政務經驗與人際關係等社會資本，因應政治變局。旨在探討人際資本在宋代中低階層士人宦途中所扮演的角色，以及政治權勢與人際情誼如何在政局變動中交互影響。孫應時及其師友的生涯起落，也體現出政局激越動盪下，道學追隨者在為學與從政之間權衡取捨所承受的壓力與相應抉擇，並呈現出朱、陸學術競合與道學群體社會網絡多樣而複雜的面貌。

黃寬重
臺灣宜蘭人。現任長庚大學醫學系講座教授、長庚醫院研究員，中央研究院歷史語言研究所兼任研究員。少時有志於社會改革，且感於體制改造有賴社會文化的潛移默化，遂投身學術研究。長年耕耘歷史學，致力推動人文學跨領域整合；近年關注士人群體的多元性，及其在政治社會中扮演的不同角色。著有《南宋地方武力──地方軍與民間自衛武力的探討》、《宋代家族與社會》、《政策．對策──宋代政治史探索》。習史四十餘年，眷戀南宋；樂在史料中拾掇新議題，興味盎然，不知老之將至。

从下层视角出发去看待道学群体，揭示出道学与现实政治和现实利益的紧密关系，视角还是很好的
一個approach的展示，黃師一如既往的路數：先給小輩展示一個方向，然後自己走一遍。
補充：黃寬重一如既往地強調不能單單利用數據庫（他的矛頭應該是CBDB之類），而要深入到文本中進行分析，才能「呈現人與人之間的溫度，也就是根本的人性」。這本書其實很好的展示了這點，尤其是關於孫應時對黨禁時期朋友的寬慰和往來書信都是良證，這也確是其高明之處。只是很顯然的，我們不能寄希望於死啃一本文集（況且如孫應時一…
黄先生以孙应时的学宦生涯，探究在世变之中，环境变化与人际关系如何影响一般士人官僚的仕途与命运，指出当时士人中的集团意识并没有后人想象中的那么强固，对于了解南宋中后期一般士人与道学群体、道学与政治的关系很有帮助。
如黃先生自己所言，此書重在以文集中的書信作為主要材料，譜寫孫應時這樣一位南宋中下層官員的「個體生命故事」。除研究進路上的創新外，此書通過孫應時的個體經歷，展示了教育與師友關係在士人仕宦命運中扮演的重要角色、中下層士人因應政治變局的多元的態度與行為、士人個體與道學群體之間的互動等多方議題，都值得進一步發掘。此外，文集書信確實是重要材料，不過竊以為書信的繫年確實也是個大問題。非有黃先生這般深厚的學殖，…
