彼得·埃森曼，1932年生于美国纽约，相继求学于康奈尔大学、哥伦比亚大学，并于剑桥大学获博士学位。埃森曼是当代世界最为杰出的建筑大师之一，1967年，他在纽约成立著名的“建筑与都市研究所”，成为新现代主义理论和后现代主义理论的研究中心。1970年代，作为“纽约白色派”五人之一，他开始在建筑界崭露头角，其后的著名设计项目House Ⅵ、Wexner Center for the Arts Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe、 City of Culture of Galicia 等获多项国际奖项，如古根海姆奖、美国艺术与文学学院的BRENNER奖等，他还荣获第九届威尼斯双年展的金狮奖终身奖(2007)。埃森曼还是一位思想家与教育家，曾先后在剑桥大学、普林斯顿大学、耶鲁大学、哈佛大学任教。他还是纽约COOPER UNION 的首位IRWIN S. 甚至某些时刻在怀疑会不会Eisenman只是在写那一章时恰巧读到那几本书，毕竟我实在想不出Marcel Proust是怎么和Luis Kahn扯上的，不过后面也逐渐习惯了每篇开篇两页那些汪洋恣肆、哲学概念满天飞的论述。意料之外的是他并不拒绝谈论历史，甚至多次提到五月风暴的影响，但这一切都被纳入到了formal analysis中，并且前置了。一切都只停留在设计结束之时，像是一位纯粹的theoris…

"A canonical work, is a hinge, a rupture, a premonition, of something that necessarily signals a change." 这个作者对canon的定义是他个人的，和一般常识里的canon定义正好相反。

peter强调了close reading的方法论，以及怎么分辨建筑indexical, symbolic, iconical这三点的相关性与不同性。
